Walking Away Those Extra Pounds? 2 mins Read

I’m on to my fourth week of walking. Somehow I managed to include walking as a part of my daily routine. And I’m super proud that I did that, my first goal was to walk for 21 days and make walking part of my habit.  My goal was to give a consistent workout to my body and get that daily caloric burn. Considering my body weight ( 110 Kg or 240 pounds ) walking was a perfect choice.  So far I had covered over 180 km in 25 days. The good thing is that my body responded beautifully to walking.

“We are what we repeatedly do, excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” ~Aristotle

In the past, I have been guilty of overexerting and injuring my body in the process. With, Walking it has been the slow and study approach.  Walking 10000 steps a day is ideal for a weight loss program. This magic number came into practice with the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, one company came up with the pedometer called Manpo-kei device roughly translates as 10000 step meter. Since then 10,000 steps has become a commonly acknowledged goal for daily fitness across the world
To reach  10000 steps goals one needs to have some kind of structure in place. My entire list of errands is planned around walking, either taking my dog out for a walk or shopping at the grocery store. All through the day walking takes the precedence as my preferred mode of commuting. Secondly, I have gradually increased my walking distance, tempo, and timing over a period of time to get to that 10000 steps. Ten thousand steps  roughly translate to 7.6 km

You will roughly burn 50-100 calories per km depending on your body weight. For weight loss, it’s good to hit a daily calories burn of 500. Remember don’t rush in, while 10000 steps & 500 Daily Calorie burn is a good goal to meet, listen to your body and make wise choices.

Like most of us, my job is sedentary and that means I’m mostly chained to my desk. Walking is a super accessible way to lose weight, all you need is a good pair of shoes, some music on the go and good road or a park to walk on, and you are all set to burn those calories. Personally, It has helped me slash off 3 Kg that’s about 6 pounds in about 3 -4 weeks.  To shed 100 pounds is a long way to go, but I guess I’m off to a good start.

Now on the next post let’s see more on the goodness of walking. Why it isn’t such a bad idea to walk your way off those extra pounds … A journey of thousand miles is well on its way.
